Recently, our Commercial Director, Kate Hill, travelled to China to explore one of the world’s most fast-moving and transformative technology landscapes. From rapid advancements in AI and automation to the scale and speed of digital innovation, her experience offered a unique perspective on how businesses are evolving in a truly global context.

In this blog, Kate shares her key takeaways from the trip, highlighting what the UK and European markets can learn, how innovation is being approached differently, and why businesses need to think bigger, move faster, and adapt sooner.

What China Taught Me About Technology and Partnerships

Last week, I had the privilege of representing Simoda and the South Yorkshire technology sector as part of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire International Trade Mission to Hong Kong and China.

In just five days, we travelled across five cities – Hong Kong, Foshan, Shenzhen, and Chengdu alongside a delegation of business leaders, civic representatives, and regional advocates. What we experienced in that time will stay with me for a long time.

Having only got back early Sunday morning and still very jet-lagged, I’m still buzzing from the sheer scale and inspiring nature of our visit.

The scale and pace were extraordinary:

  • 50+ meetings and appointments
  • 5 cities in 5 days
  • 14,000 miles travelled
  • 100,737 steps
  • 4 factory tours
  • 2 high-speed bullet trains
  • 500+ new connections
  • National TV coverage in China
  • 2 confirmed business contracts and a signed Memorandum of Understanding

But beyond the numbers, what stood out most was something far more important: intent, organisation, and ambition.

A Different Level of Coordination

What we saw across each city was the seamless integration of technology, infrastructure, people, and process.

Cities are being designed and continuously adapted – with technology at the core. Not as an afterthought, but as a fundamental enabler of economic growth, efficiency, and citizen experience.

As someone leading commercial strategy in a technology business, this reinforced something we are deeply passionate about at Simoda:

Technology only delivers value when it works hand in hand with people and processes.

And in China, that alignment is happening at scale.

The Power of Relationships

Another key takeaway was the importance placed on relationships and long-term collaboration.

Every meeting was underpinned by:

Genuine curiosity Respect for partnership A willingness to explore mutual value

There is a clear understanding that meaningful international growth doesn’t happen through transactions, it happens through trusted relationships built over time.

This strongly aligns with how we approach our work at Simoda through consultative engagement, understanding real challenges, and co-creating solutions.

Proud to Represent Sheffield

I was incredibly proud to represent Sheffield and South Yorkshire alongside such an inspiring delegation of leaders.

The region has real strengths – innovation, resilience, and a growing technology ecosystem and this mission demonstrated that we have a strong story to tell on the global stage.

None of this would have been possible without the leadership and organisation from Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, particularly Danny Johnson and Stacey Morris, who made an incredibly demanding programme feel seamless.

So What Happens Next?

For me, the most important part of any trade mission isn’t the trip itself – it’s what happens afterwards.

Now the real work begins:

  • Converting conversations into partnerships
  • Turning insight into action
  • Raising our own ambition to compete globally
  • Bringing back learnings that can benefit our region

At Simoda, we’re already thinking about:

  • How we deepen international partnerships
  • How we apply technology-led operational excellence more effectively in the UK
  • How we continue to raise our profile and capability as a global partner
Final Reflection

China’s pace of innovation is undeniable. But what struck me most wasn’t just the technology, it was the mindset.

A mindset of:

  • Continuous improvement
  • Long-term thinking
  • Bold ambition
  • Agreeing on a plan and getting things done (a whole smart city area is built in as little as 10 years, including all supporting infrastructure and connectivity)

If we can match that mindset alongside our own strengths in creativity, innovation, and collaboration, there is a huge opportunity for South Yorkshire to thrive on a much bigger stage.

Now it’s on us to step up.
